Virtualization Software Watch: Parallels Containers 4.0, Wyse's Desktop USB Solution, Xsigo's Director with VMware

This week Parallels Inc. announced the general release of Parallels Virtuozzo Containers 4.0, a new version of its server virtualization software for data centers.

According to Parallels (formerly SWsoft), Virtuozzo Containers works by, "dynamically partitions a single Windows or Linux operating system instance into highly efficient and scalable virtual environments or 'containers'..[and] offers three times the density or more versus other solutions, which permits data center managers to maximize the number of virtual containers per each physical server."

Upgrades in 4.0 include options to use Red Hat or Windows Server 2003 clustering options, a revamped file system, and a new remote management tool, Parallels Infrastructure Manager.

San Jose, Calif.-based Wyse Technologies today released Wyse TCX Virtualizer, new software that, according to the company, allows users on its thin client desktops to connect to peripherals like printers and scanners via USB -- eliminating the need for separate desktop drivers.

According to the company, the technology works with "hundreds" of USB 1.1/2.0 devices, giving end users a plug-and-play experience with "that's been impossible in the past,"said Curt Schwebke, chief technology officer for Wyse, in a prepared statement.

TCX USB Virtualizer is available for $250 per seat.

Xsigo Systems announced this week that it has integrated the management of its Xsigo VP780 I/O Director with VMware Infrastructure 3, with immediate availability of a plug-in for for VMware VirtualCenter 2.5 (also announced this week).

According to optimization-focused Xsigo, I/O Director offers 10 MB of "dynamically allocated" bandwidth, lets IT pros "instantly re-deploy virtual I/O resources as needed," among other features.
