Cisco Upgrades UCS with WhipTail Storage
Cisco acquires maker of high-performance flash arrays to bolster converged infrastructure offering.
Cisco intends to acquire WhipTail to speed up performance of its Cisco Unified Computing System converged infrastructure solutions. The deal, valued at $415 million, was announced late last week.
WhipTail makes solid-state storage that employs software-based acceleration technology to boost performance. Its target market is data-intensive applications, with the Accela storage array holding 1 to 12TB in a 2U rack, and the higher end Invicta and Invicta Infinity 6U being modular and scalable 6U racks with capacities of 6 to 360TB.
Cisco bills its UCS strategy as a converged infrastructure play, which provides for server, storage, networking and software management in a unified system. According to a Cisco press release, the addition of WhipTail's flash storage will be used to accelerate the performance of the UCS fabric architecture.
The acquisiton is expected to be completed at the beginning of 2014, with WhipTail employees being integrated into Cisco's Computing Systems group.
