Riverbed Ups Ante on Cloud Storage

Upgraded Whitewater storage appliances and OS promise more capacity, faster performance, and shorter recovery times.

Riverbed Technology has added new, higher-capacity hardware models and an upgraded OS to its Whitewater cloud storage appliance family. The system is optimized for data protection and archiving, and promises instant recovery and end-to-end security. Organizations pay for only what they use, eliminating frequent hardware refreshes and large capital outlays.

The three new Whitewater model (730, 2030, 3030) appliances offer between 8 and 96 TB usable cache capacity. The 3030 model supports backup and archive datasets of up to 14.4 petabytes, before compression and de-duplication onto the local cache.

Whitewater OS 3.0 includes pairwise replication, a feature that allows replication to an additional Whitewater appliance at a secondary location. Enterprises can tailor the system to meet business continuity plan RTOs. For the fastest RTO, a Whitewater appliance can recover at disk speed to a secondary site. A new pinning feature lets enterprises choose which backup data sets are available on the Whitewater appliance cache for immediate access; it can then backup and recover less critical backup data sets from the cloud.

For faster performance, a 10 gigabit networking interface offers ingest performances of up to 2.5 terabytes per hour. The 10 gigabit networking interface also lets enterprises transfer to Amazon Glacier cloud storage leveraging Amazon Direct Connect.
