Microsoft Squares Up Certification with Virtualization-Based Title

Microsoft's certification program emphasizes virtualization and cloud expertise.

Microsoft's certification is currently going through a revamp and one of the enhancements is further emphasis on giving IT pros the means to prove virtualization and cloud expertise. One new addition is the creation of a portal specifically branded Virtualization2, or "Virtualization, Squared."

According to a blog post from Brad Anderson, CVP with the Windows Server & System Center division, the idea here is that the company recognizes that many of its certification candidates "are comfortable with both Microsoft and VMware platforms." As such, his group has been working with the Microsoft Learning Group to create a new certification that takes this into consideration.

Dubbed Microsoft Certified Specialist: Server Virtualization with Hyper-V and System Center, the certification requires passage of one exam, 74-409: Server Virtualization with Windows Server Hyper-V and System Center. The exam page doesn't mention vSphere among its study objectives, but Anderson says the exam "is geared toward the skills of VMware VCPs."

Microsoft is currently looking for beta testers, who will be able to take the exam for free; upon release, the exam is $150. Free training will be offered online Nov. 19 and 20 via the Microsoft Virtual Academy. Details can be found in the blog post.
