VMware Boosts Cloud Services, Simplifies Multi-Cloud Adoption

VMware announced a wide-ranging initiative to simplify multi-cloud adoption and expand its Cloud Services portfolio.

As part of that effort, the enterprise software vendor and virtualization specialist enhanced various offerings on the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud, along with announcing an expansion to provide services in the AWS London region.

Along with rolling out the VMware Cloud on AWS service to the AWS London datacenter, VMware said it enhanced the enterprise functionality of the offering via initiatives such as new high-availability capabilities coming with Stretched Clusters.

"Applications in VMware Cloud on AWS can take advantage of this high availability capability built directly into the infrastructure, without having to rewrite or refactor the application," VMware exec Raghu Raghuram said in a blog post last week.

"We're extending a proven model for protecting applications from the datacenter to the cloud, complementing the world-class cloud delivered by AWS. Customers will be able to have the confidence that their applications will receive the same level of availability and protection they receive today. And we do this as a native capability built into the infrastructure, freeing developers from the responsibility of custom building this into each application."

Among a bevy of announcements, VMware specifically highlighted:

  • VMware Hybrid Cloud Extension Service for Private Cloud: This Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) offering provides application mobility and infrastructure hybridity across different vSphere versions, on-premises and cloud implementations.
  • Expanded Wavefront by VMware Service: Another SaaS offering, this is said to be a high-scale, metrics monitoring and analytics platform that supports cloud-native and enterprise applications running on public and private cloud infrastructure, such as AWS, Google Cloud Platform, workloads running on Azure, and now VMware Cloud on AWS.
  • VMware Log Intelligence Service: This new offering for VMware Cloud Services reportedly will deliver deep operational insights into VMware-based datacenters and VMware Cloud on AWS.
  • Expanded VMware Cost Insight Service: This is an addition to existing support for AWS, Microsoft Azure, and VMware private cloud datacenters, providing detailed assessments for migrating workloads to VMware Cloud on AWS and calculating the capacity and the cost of running apps in private or public clouds.

"VMware Cloud on AWS is a seamlessly integrated hybrid cloud offering which gives our customers the software-defined data center (SDDC) experience from the leader in private cloud, VMware, running on the leading public cloud provider, AWS, VMware's Sai Gopalan said in another post. "Bringing together the best of VMware and AWS, VMware Cloud on AWS provides customers an operationally consistent and familiar way to run, manage and secure applications in a hybrid cloud with access to a broad range of innovative and comprehensive AWS services and robust disaster protection."
