Apache Updates CloudStack IaaS Platform for Cloud Orchestration

The Apache Software Foundation (ASF) today announced CloudStack v4.11, the newest version of its Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) platform for enterprise cloud orchestration.

ASF, an open source champion and charitable organization, oversees the development of Apache CloudStack for the rapid creation of private, public and hybrid cloud environments.

Specifically, the Java-based project provides a management server and agents -- if needed -- for hypervisor hosts so organizations can run an IaaS cloud.

Its features and functionality include:

• Works with hosts running XenServer/XCP, KVM, Hyper-V, and/or VMware ESXi with vSphere
• Provides a friendly Web-based UI for managing the cloud
• Provides a native API
• May provide an Amazon S3/EC2 compatible API (optional)
• Manages storage for instances running on the hypervisors (primary storage) as well as templates, snapshots, and ISO images (secondary storage)
• Orchestrates network services from the data link layer (L2) to some application layer (L7) services, such as DHCP, NAT, firewall, VPN, and so on
• Accounting of network, compute, and storage resources
• Multi-tenancy/account separation
• User management

It also incorporates new-age technologies such as software-defined networking (SDN) -- for example, integrating with the SDN offering from Nuage Networks.

"Apache CloudStack release 4.11 has impressive new content," said Kris Sterckx, CloudStack development lead at Nuage Networks, in a Feb. 12 news release. "More than any previous release, v4.11 leverages the value of Nuage Networks SDN with Nuage 5.0 support, SDN managed networks, per-interface DHCP options support and automation support for migrating deployed Apache CloudStack clouds from traditional Linux bridge networking to SDN/OVS based networking."
