VMware Acquires Desktone

VMware shores up Horizon suite solutions by buying desktop-as-a-service company.

In a move to shore up its desktop virtualization offerings, VMware announced that it acquired desktop-as-a-service company Desktone. The announcement was made the first day of the company's VMworld Europe conference taking place this week in Barcelona, Spain.

Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. According to a release on the VMware site, "the transaction is expected to be immaterial to VMware's financial results."

VMware already has a capable VDI solution with Horizon View and the rest of the Horizon suite. The acquisition of Desktone will extend its VDI offerings a bit further and on an enteprise scale by allowing IT providers to enact self-servicing of VDI and shared remote desktops for their customers in a secure, mutli-tenant cloud.

Forrester principal analyst David Johnston blogs about the acquisition here, and puts it in context of the DaaS market, which remains small for the time being, but which he views as strong in the coming year. With the acquisition, he believes other companies in the space "tuCloud, DinCloud, and LeoStream...are worth investigating."
