From Tech-Ed: Hyper-V Expands Interoperability with CentOS Support
Hosting solutions providers able to manage various cloud infrastructures from Hyper-V.
Among the many announcements coming out of the Microsoft Tech Ed conference in Atlanta this week, here's yet another: The company has added support for CentOS to Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V. According to a blog from the general marketing manager for Microsoft's Open Solutions Group, Sandy Gupta, the CentOS support was the "number one requirement for interoperability" among customer-generated feedback. The extended support gives some leverage to hosting solutions providers who want to centrally manage the various cloud infrastructures deployed by customers from Hyper-V.
CentOS is a Linux server distribution based on the Red Hat distro. Because it's free, it's a popular option for hosting solution providers. A trending report from W3techs.com shows it to be the top Linux distro over the past year, although Debian has been running neck and neck with it by less than a point in more recent months. At DistroWatch.com, CentOS has placed as high as 10 among Linux distros in the last 12 months.
Gupta said that he'll be demonstrating Hyper-V's support for CentOS, showing how cloud infrastructures can be managed through Hyper-V via Systems Center Operations Manager and Systems Center Orchestrator. That demo won't be at Tech-Ed, however; he's at the Open Source Business Conference in San Francisco, which is also taking place this week.
