Direct Restoration to Microsoft Azure
Veeam adds to its lineup of free offerings.

Veeam presents its vision of Backup and Disaster Recovery as "Availability for the Always-On Enterprise." It has been moving its technology into Microsoft's virtualization and cloud computing environments for some time. Now the company has announced a recovery feature for Microsoft's Azure cloud computing environment.
The company already enables organizations to store backups in Azure with Veeam Cloud Connect (VCC) for the Enterprise (VCC-E). The new feature is designed for customers needing to restore Veeam to Microsoft's Azure IaaS offering, including backups created by Veeam Backup & Replication, Veeam Endpoint Backup FREE, and Veeam Backup Free Edition.
The new feature -- Direct Restore to Microsoft Azure -- will be integrated into future versions of Veeam Backup & Replication. It's being delivered as a preview in the form of free, pre-configured Azure appliance that can be found in the Microsoft Azure Marketplace. It's designed to provide a cloud restore function for Veeam Backup & Replication and Veeam Endpoint Backup.
Dan's Take: Walking the Talk
Veeam's marketing statements have long been a large overreach. When it only had products to support VMware's computing environment, it was describing them as "Availability for the Always-On Data Center." They used this catch phrase even though they only offered backup and recovery products for VMware and didn't provide tools for any other computing environment.
Later, Veeam began to offer products for Linux and Microsoft Hyper-V-based environments. The company recently has been focusing on expanding into the world of Azure, and this announcement bolsters that support.
The company upped the ante by changing its catch phrase to "Availability for the Always-On Enterprise," even though it still doesn't support all of the major X86-based hypervisors or other cloud computing environments.
Still, Veeam has a great reputation with its clients and clearly is making efforts to live up to its ever-expanding marketing statements.
