Dell EMC Says New Switch Eases Shift to Software-Defined Networking
Dell EMC unveiled a new switch that it says embraces the world of modern networking, which is seeing an architectural shift toward technology disaggregation and software-defined networking (SDN).
Announced last week, the new Z-series fabric switch targets 100 Gigabit Ethernet for open modern datacenters and enterprise transformation initiatives.
Officially named Z9264F-ON, the switch fits into Dell EMC's vision of the SDN-powered transformation, which it calls Open Networking.
That disruptive initiative, the company said, is embodied in a datacenter architectural shift marked by the adoption of virtualization and automation technologies, with technology disaggregation at its core.
"This level of technology disaggregation, which Dell EMC calls Open Networking, is central to the shift to software-defined networking (SDN), as networking software options and capability dramatically increase," the company said in a statement. "The new Z9264F-ON embraces this new consumption model, offering customers more software choices, whether commercial or open source, than competing alternatives opening the doors to greater innovation, greater savings, and ultimately greater control."
In advancing the Open Networking initiative, the company said the switch supports technology from Dell EMC, Big Switch Networks, Cumulus Networks along with "better together solutions" with VMware NSX, which is VMware's network virtualization platform for the Software-Defined Data Center (SDDC).
The switch "enables open source communities with hardware options to pair with open source software packages, Linux Foundation OPX, OCP SONiC," Dell EMC said.
