VMware Announces Intent to Acquire Bitfusion

Yesterday (July 18, 2019) on the VMware vSphere Blog VMware Inc. announced its intent to acquire Bitfusion, which VMware described as "a pioneer in virtualization of accelerated compute with a strong focus on GPU technology." With this acquisition, VMware intends to "help businesses more efficiently use AI technologies on-premises and in hybrid cloud environments," according to the blog post.

Bitfusion's software platform offers a way to decouple "specific physical resources from the servers they are attached to in the environment" and "can be extended to support other accelerators like FPGAs and ASICs."

According to VMware, once the acquisition has closed, the company plans to integrate Bitfusion into the vSphere platform and "bolster VMware's strategy of supporting AI- and ML-based workloads by virtualizing hardware accelerators."
