VMware Takes Database Development to the Cloud
vFabric Director to support open-source Postgres SQL database initially; it's available now at CloudFoundry.com.
VMware has plans to make databases available as a service in the cloud with its VMware vFabric Data Director. The news was part of an announcement made by VMmare at its VMworld Conference in Las Vegas.
vFabric is an extension of the company's Cloud Application Platform and is based on the vSphere hypervisor technology. vFabric Data Director will be able to automate common database operations in the cloud, with provisioning and security managed through standardized policies. Management of those policies will be done through vSphere.
vFabric Data Director will provide support initially for the open-source PostgresSQL DBMS, with developers being able to develop and package database applications through a self-service model. The vFabric version of PostgresSQL can be accessed at the company's CloudFoundry.com site.
