InterCloud Orchestrates Network Functions Virtualization

Next-generation networking company InterCloud Systems Inc. launched a new platform to orchestrate network functions virtualization (NFV) technologies.

NFV is a new-age networking technology disrupting the industry along with software-defined networking (SDN). It puts the emphasis on virtualization software rather than hardware for handling network functionality such as network address translation (NAT) and domain name service (DNS), along with load balancing, firewalls, intrusion detection systems and so on.

To manage such functionality, InterCloud is launching NFVGrid, an NFV orchestration platform, as part of its Network-as-a-Service (NaaS) offering. Such tools are used to manage virtualized network functions (VNFs), instantiating, monitoring, repairing them and handling billing for the services, according to Wikipedia.

"This new platform utilizes open APIs to ensure interoperability with different [operations support systems) OSS and [business support systems] BSS platforms, cloud management systems, SDN controllers, and VNF managers," the company said in a news release.

InterCloud -- which provides solutions to telecommunications service providers and corporate enterprises -- bases its system upon the Juniper Networks Inc. SDN solution called Contrail.

"This platform enables our network service provider and enterprise customers to quickly launch network functions without dealing with complex underlying open stack, hypervisor and physical hardware configurations, which results in low cap-ex and on-demand scale up or down based architecture," the company said. No pricing or availability information was given.
