VMware Cloud on AWS Users Get Workload Migration Help with JetStream Offering

Organization using the VMware Cloud on AWS service are being targeted by JetStream Software with a new offering to help them migrate their on-premises virtualized workloads to the AWS platform.

As first unveiled in October 2016, VMware and AWS partnered up to deliver VMware Cloud on AWS, a vSphere-based cloud service running on AWS. The service brings VMware's enterprise-class software-defined datacenter (SDDC) software to the AWS cloud and an integrated hybrid cloud environment.

As we reported last year when it was highlighted by VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger, VMware Cloud on AWS essentially allows use of VMware technologies on the AWS public cloud. Because most admins are comfortable with vSphere, using it on AWS eases the painful cloud learning curve by a lot.

JetStream's new offering, JetStream Migrate, targets organizations already using VMware Cloud on AWS, an on-demand service unveiled last August that runs on elastic, bare-metal AWS infrastructure.

VMware Cloud on AWS leverages Cloud Foundation, VMware's software-defined datacenter (SDDC) platform, to enable organizations to extend their on-premises vSphere environments to bare-metal AWS infrastructure while accessing AWS' full service portfolio. The integration is designed to be seamless, according to the companies, obviating the need for users to develop new tools or processes, rewrite their applications, or acquire new hardware.

JetStream is now offering to help those customers go all in on the AWS, moving their data, enterprise virtual machines (VMs) and workloads to the cloud platform. Along the way, the company promises to ensure continuous operation of the VM-based applications during data replication.

"The application is designed to support live migration in a variety of circumstances, including data replication via physical data transport device and data replication over non-optimal network connections," the company said in a statement last week.

The service's Web site says the software specifically targets enterprise environments running VMware vSphere and can support migration to any VMware Service Provider Partner datacenter.

"VMware Cloud on AWS provides customers a seamlessly integrated hybrid cloud offering that gives customers the SDDC experience from the leader in private cloud, running on the leading public cloud provider, AWS," said VMware exec Mark Lohmeyer. "Solutions such as JetStream Migrate enable IT teams to reduce cost, increase efficiency and create operational consistency across clouds, and empower customers with flexibility and choice in solutions that can drive business value."
