Enhanced NSX Portfolio Powers New VMware Virtual Cloud Network

VMware Inc. announced its Virtual Cloud Network and the new NSX solutions on which it will run.

In what VMware Inc. has dubbed "building the business fabric of the digital enterprise," on Tuesday at Dell Technologies World the company announced its Virtual Cloud Network and the new NSX solutions on which it will run.

As Rajiv Ramaswami, COO of Products and Cloud Services at VMware, explained that the "network of the future is not about physical hardware/boxes; it's about supporting applications and data residing everywhere," he emphasized that VMware's vision strategy for networking is moving to a multi-hypervisor/multi-cloud/multi-platform world.

The foundation for this new Virtual Cloud Network is VMware NSX. According to the announcement, the following solutions are new to the NSX family and will power the API-driven network:

NSX SD-WAN by VeloCloud (recently acquired by VMware in December) has integration with both NSX Cloud and NSX Data Center and will be able to simplify activation and automated connectivity.

NSX Cloud provides support for applications running in Microsoft Azure.

NSX Data Center supports containerized cloud-native and bare-metal applications.

NSX Hybrid Connect provides workload mobility and migrations from the datacenter to the cloud while also ensuring network connectivity and traffic optimization between clouds.

According to a prepared statement included in the press release, Ramaswami claims that "VMware is helping customers today to build tomorrow's software-defined Virtual Cloud Networks to connect and secure apps and users. And with the new NSX networking and security portfolio, we are helping customers build a Virtual Cloud Network today through a software-based digital business fabric that is flexible, programmable and inherently more secure network."
