VMware Fusion Expands Mac OS X Support, Adds Virus Security

VMware has released an update to Fusion, the company's desktop virtualization solution for Mac OS X. The latest release, version 2.0.2, includes a range of enhancements, from updated host and guest operating system support to new security features to new virtual machine importing capabilities.

VMware Fusion 2.0.2, released Wednesday, adds support for Mac OS X 10.5.6 as a host operating system and Ubuntu 8.10 as a guest operating system, as well as experimental support for Mac OS X Server 10.5.6 as a guest operating system. It also now allows Windows virtual machines to be imported from Parallels Desktop 4.0 and Parallels Server for Mac.

Other new features include:

  • Support for mounting image files in the .DMG format (unencrypted).
  • Performance improvements in the area of folder browsing in Windows virtual machines.
  • A 12-month subscription to McAfee VirusScan Plus 2009.
