Pivotal Container Service 1.1 GA Aims to Simplify Kubernetes Management
This week VMware Inc. and Pivotal Software Inc. announced the general availability of the next iteration of their Pivotal Container Service (PKS), the "purpose-built container solution to operationalize Kubernetes" that made its first debut in August 2017 at VMware World.
According to a blog post by VMware's Senior Product Line Manager of Cloud-Native Apps BU Narayan Mandaleeka that details the new features and enhancements, there are four key areas that are improved upon: developer productivity, high availability, management and operations, and networking and security.
For developer productivity, PKS 1.1 supports Kubernetes 1.10, which offers up enhanced node and resource management, storage, and programmability and security features.
In the high-availability area, multi-AZ support will be provided. Mandaleeka explained that "by evenly spreading the cluster nodes across multiple AZs, if one AZ goes down, the workloads can continue working properly without interruption."
Three key integration features will help enhance operations and management: vRealize Log Insight for log management and analytics, Wavefront by VMware for Kubernetes monitoring, alerting and containerized applications insight, and Harbor 1.5 for cloud-native management and container image service.
The focus on networking and security includes deeper network isolation at the pod, node and cluster level, flexible network topology choices for improved operations, and the ability for operators to "deploy PKS behind a secure HTTP/HTTPS proxy."
