Silver Peak Scales Out SD-WAN Edge Offering

Silver Peak, a leader in the software-defined wide-area networking (SD-WAN) space, announced updates to its Unity EdgeConnect SD-WAN edge platform that allow for massive scaling.

The Santa Clara, Calif., company said the updates will allow large enterprises to scale, automate and simplify the configuration, deployment and management of a modern WAN edge to more than 10,000 sites.

Other improvements are said to include:

  • Multi-fabric orchestration and management
  • One-click automation with leading cloud services
  • Advanced segmentation and cloud-scale connectivity

However, its' the scaling functionality that has attracted industry attention.

"As the digital-transformation initiatives and cloud strategies of large enterprises mature and become increasingly sophisticated, SD-WAN offerings must be capable not only of scaling to accommodate large numbers of sites but also of providing multi-tenant and segmentation capabilities that the world's largest enterprise customers demand for control, manageability, and consistent security across multi-cloud environments," the company quoted Brad Casemore, vice president of research, datacenter networks at IDC, as saying in a Dec. 10 statement. "With the latest enhancements to its Unity EdgeConnect SD-WAN platform, Silver Peak is responding to the evolving requirements of its largest enterprise customers."

Silver Peak said its new Unity Orchestrator Global Enterprise management software specifically targets large-scale global enterprises with multiple divisions, business units or subsidiaries that can all require a dedicated SD-WAN fabric. These fabrics can be individually orchestrated and managed, which provides enterprises with centralized network-wide visibility and control, such as aggregated observability of the entire network. The company said the key capabilities of Orchestrator Global Enterprise include:

  • Single sign-on view to all SD-WAN fabrics
  • Secure orchestration-as-a-service
  • Centralized alarm view across all SD-WAN fabrics
  • Fabric independent software versioning, maintenance and upgrade cycles
  • Granular role-based access control for network administrators

In a recent Gartner Inc. research report, Silver Peak was named a "Leader" in the WAN edge infrastructure space, aong with VMware.
