Citrix Gets Cloud Storage with ShareFile

The acquisition gives Citrix a foot in a crowded cloud storage segment competing with Dropbox, Apple and others.

Citrix Systems last week said it acquired cloud-based data storage company ShareFile. The acquisition gives Citrix a foot in the cloud storage market, competing with the likes of Dropbox, Apple iCloud, Google's forthcoming Google Drive and virtualization competitor VMware, with its upcoming Project Octopus. But according to a Citrix press release, the acquisition appears to go beyond just cloud storage and more into data sharing and collaboration. Even then, details were sparse.

According to the Citrix release, ShareFile CEO Jess Lipson will beome vice president and general manager of a new Data Sharing group at Citrix; it was sparse on details regarding other ShareFile personnel coming over to Citrix. Citrix said it plans to reveal more details on its plan next week during its Citrix Synergy conference in Barcelona, Spain.
