Virtualization Hardware Watch: Rackable's New 4-Way Server, Platespin Virtualized Recovery Appliance

Last week Fremont, Calif.-based Rackable Systems announced the release of a new VMware-certified four-way server featuring dual- and quad-core Intel Xeon processors.

"Delivering up to 16 cores and 256 GB of memory, the C4108 is an ideal enterprise-class solution for both database applications and for server virtualization," Tony Gaughan, chief products officer of Rackable Systems, said in a prepared statement.

According to the company, the C4108 features Xeon 7200 and 7300 series processors, can accommodate seven PCI Express add-in cards and eight hot-swap SAS hard disk drives, and supports Windows Server 2008, SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 10, and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.

Meanwhile, Toronto-based Platespin Limited announced it is now shipping Forge, what it calls the "first-ever virtualized recovery hardware appliance."

Forge offers prepackaged hardware, software, applications and virtualization technology in one package for "out-of-the-box protection for up to 25 physical or virtual workloads.

"By consolidating multiple physical and virtual workloads onto a single PlateSpin Forge recovery appliance, we can achieve a 25 to 1 workload protection ratio with no need for costly investments in duplicate hardware and software for one-to-one redundancy,” John Shaffer, director of technology at investment banking firm Greenhill & Co., a Platespin customer, said of the package in a prepared release.
