VMware Releases Public Beta of Kubernetes-as-a-Service Offering
Today VMware Inc. announced a new addition to its VMware Cloud Services portfolio, the public beta of VMware Kubernetes Engine (VKE). Described as a "Kubernetes-as-a-Service offering that provides easy-to-use, 'secure-by-default' and cost-effective Kubernetes," the company said VKE will first launch on Amazon Web Services (AWS), with support on Microsoft Azure and additional cloud systems planned for the future.
In a blog post announcing the public beta service, VMware's VP for Cloud-Native Applications Bill Shelton and VP for Cloud-Native Applications R&D Krishna Ganugapati explained how they used customer feedback to frame their "goals and priorities," which include simplification, cost efficiency, policy-based management, multi-cloud ready and highly secure by default.
Although specific price points are still in the works, Shelton and Ganugapati did say that VKE allows customers to pay for their Kubernetes clusters and only the vCPUs and RAM used "down to the last second."
VMware is encouraging customers to use VKE (you can request access from the Web site) and provide feedback so the company can continue to "evolve the service."
