Dell's 'Hyper-Converged, Software-Defined' IoT Surveillance Solution Aims for Simplicity

This week at VMworld, the Edge and and IoT Solutions Division at Dell Technologies announced that it's "combining tools from its broad portfolio with technology from Intel and partners in the Dell Technologies IoT Solutions Partner Program" to provide new Internet of Things (IoT) offerings that include more automation and intelligence.

"By enabling computer vision with Dell Technologies IoT solutions, customers can more accurately, efficiently and effectively 'see' relevant information pertaining to areas such as public safety, customer experience, and product inventory and quality," the company said in it's official announcement of the product launch. "Surveillance is the first use case to which Dell Technologies has applied computer vision, so customers can more cost-effectively monitor events in the physical world and automate decision making."

The company's new IoT Solutions for Surveillance, expected to be released some time in October of this year, integrates with several VMware-branded offerings and is available in three different editions: Platinum, Platinum + Advanced Management and Platinum Development.

With the Platinum edition, clients get the HCI infrastructure and IoT management that comes with IoT Solutions for Surveillance, with monitoring powered by VMware Pulse IoT Center. For the Platinum + Advanced Management edition, clients get everything in the Platinum edition, plus a workload and lifecycle SCCD manager, as well as "intelligent" log analytics and management via VMware's vRealize log insight.

Developers get the "Advanced Edition" plus network microsegementation abilities and containerization via Pivitol Cloud Foundry.

The solution also features:

  • Dell EMC Elastic Cloud storage (private, off-premises or cloud) with scaling from from 300TB to 50PB+
  • High availability (and zero data loss) via vSAN Raid 5/6, across flash and disk
  • ESXi Enterprise Plus for disaster recovery and additional high availability

The solution will only be sold through Dell EMC partners via what are called IoT Connected Bundles.
