With Microsoft's former head of the Cloud & Enterprise division stepping up, Microsoft has named Scott Guthrie to replace Satya Nadella.

The announcement was made internally, according to several reports, including this one from ZDNet, that says the appointment is an "interim" one.

Guthrie is a well-known figure inside of the company, with a reputation as a highly respected technologist and programmer. He has run several divisions within the company, having built his reputation as the visionary behind Visual Studio's tools and being a vocal advocate for ASP.NET and Silverlight within the company. For a high-level executive, he regularly displays his programming chops on his blog at http://weblogs.asp.net/scottgu/.

Guthrie moved up to head the Azure division three years ago and has been instrumental in its successful development and has been influential in the company's overall cloud vision and roadmap. In that group, he reported directly to Nadella when Nadella headed the Cloud & Enterprise division.

His name, along with Nadella, was on the roster for potential Microsoft CEO candidates.
