VMware's Horizon 6 Unifies End User Computing
The company's sixth generation virtualization platform for unifying end-user computing has competitors taking notice.
VMware's sixth generation virtualization platform for unifying end-user computing, Horizon 6, was announced today, with a bevy of new features and capabilities aimed at simplifying computing at the end points for users, and providing comprehensive management and capabilities for those tasked with juggling those end points.
The highlight of this release is the introduction of a unified workspace. That workspace offers the same interface for users to get at apps whether users move from desktop to tablet to phone. Apps can be hosted or delivered locally through various publishing mechanisms, which users can access through single sign-on.
As end-user access is simplified, so to is device image management, which is centralized through an updated VMware Mirage that can be used to build and deliver assets to users.
Horizon 6 is fully integrated to take advantage of a bevy of recent VMware offerings, including VMware Virtual SAN for storage, vCenter Operations for View for performance and health monitoring and provisioning of desktops and devices, as well as delivery of those desktops and services via the vCloud suite.
VMware Horizon 6 is expected to be delivered soon, and will be available in three editions: Horizon View Standard (basic VDI delivery), Horizon Advanced (with VSAN, central image management, and unified workspaces), and Horizon Enterprise (delivery via cloud services). Pricing starts at $250 per licensed concurrent or named user.
