Cisco Teams with Nutanix for New Hyperconverged Solution to Replace HyperFlex

Cisco teamed up with enterprise cloud specialist Nutanix to replace its HyperFlex offering with a new hyperconverged solution as part of a strategic partnership announced in August.

Now generally available is Cisco Compute Hyperconverged with Nutanix, focusing on application, data and infrastructure management. Cisco said it promises to help organizations easily deploy and scale IT infrastructure with a new take on hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI), which the company defines as the combination of compute, virtualization, storage and networking in a single cluster.

"What's different about this solution is that it combines the strength of Cisco's networking and SaaS-managed compute portfolio with hybrid multicloud software from Nutanix, based on its market-leading HCI foundation," Cisco said in an Oct. 2 announcement.

Nutanix also weighed in, filling in details on what software constitutes the specific wares mentioned above: "This new platform is a fully integrated and validated solution that combines Cisco's SaaS-managed compute and networking infrastructure (Cisco Unified Computing System with Cisco Intersight), networking (ACI), and management (UCS Manager) with Nutanix Cloud Platform -- which includes Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure (NCI) and its built-in AHV Hypervisor, Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM), Nutanix Unified Storage (NUS), and Desktop Services solutions."

The solution introduces two new hardware nodes:

They work on the Nutanix Acropolis Hypervisor (AHV) and the VMware vSphere hypervisor, according to an FAQ.

More information can be found in at-a-glance guidance that lists these benefits:

  • Simplify infrastructure operations with a cloud-operating model that delivers visibility, control, and consistency for hyperconverged systems across highly distributed environments.
  • Effortlessly address modern applications and use cases with a hyperconverged solution offering flexible deployment options, SaaS innovations, GPU accelerators, and network and drive technologies, plus multicloud integration.
  • Keep systems running and protected with an augmented joint-solution support model combined with proactive, automated resiliency and security capabilities.

After announcing the strategic partnership with Nutanix in August, Cisco last month provided end-of-life details for the hardware components of HyperFlex, being replaced by Cisco Compute Hyperconverged with Nutanix.
