New Dell EMC PowerEdge MX Offers SDN Workload Support

Dell EMC recently launched PowerEdge MX, new hardware that supports both traditional and emerging workloads, such as software-defined networking and storage, plus artificial intelligence, machine learning and Internet of Things (IoT) workloads.

According to the press release, the PowerEdge MX hardware, which is powered by Intel Xeon processors, is "able to support a combination of dense virtualization, software-defined storage, software-defined networking, artificial intelligence and big data projects. ... By creating on-the-fly hardware capacity, over-provisioning and stranded assets are reduced as performance and efficiency are optimized."

With PowerEdge MX, aside from the baseline PowerEdgeMX7000 7U, eight-bay chassis, customers can choose from a variety of compute sleds, storage sleds and either Ethernet or Fibre Channel switching components to customize their hardware architecture.

As for system management, the unit includes the Dell EMC Open Manage Enterprise -- Module Edition, Dell EMC OpenManage Mobile plus Quick Sync 2. It also includes ProSupport Plus.

"PowerEdge MX, with its kinetic infrastructure, is uniquely designed without a mid-plane, enabling support for multiple generations of technology specifically, the absence of a mid-plane enables direct compute to I/O module connections, allowing for future technology upgrades without disrupting customer operations and without a mid-plane upgrade," the company explained. "With this approach, PowerEdge MX is prepared to one day support fully disaggregated components, down to memory-centric devices, such as storage class memory, GPUs and FPGAs, to offer customers full composability."
