Oracle, VMware in Hybrid Cloud Partnership

In a move targeting enterprise hybrid cloud customers, Oracle and VMware are teaming up to enable customers to run VMware Cloud Foundation on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.

VMware Cloud Foundation is described as an integrated software stack bundling several products into a single platform that can work on-premises as a private cloud or as public cloud service. Its products include compute virtualization, storage virtualization, network virtualization, and cloud management and monitoring.

The partnership will reportedly help customers easily migrate VMware vSphere workloads to Oracle's Generation 2 Cloud Infrastructure, with Oracle providing technical support for its software running in VMware environments in customer on-premise datacenters and Oracle-certified cloud environments.

The companies said benefits of the partnership include:

• Cloud flexibility: The ability to extend VMware deployments to a hybrid cloud environment spanning the datacenter and Oracle Cloud, or migrate VMs at a preferred pace to reduce infrastructure.
• Control over an environment: Organizations can run the versions of VMware software they want, with full administrative access to the entire stack of VMware components running on bare-metal cloud compute instances under their control. Firms can maintain tested and proven on-premise deployment architectures and processes.
• Control over the schedule: Enterprises can update and patch on their own schedule, while fully testing environment upgrades and deploying them at a chosen pace.
• Global reach: Customers can leverage Oracle's global footprint to scale worldwide without establishing their own datacenters.

"As more of our customers make the move to cloud, they're looking for a superior VMware experience," said Oracle exec Don Johnson in a news release issued during Oracle's OpenWorld event. "We are excited that Oracle Cloud customers will be able to run VMware workloads in Oracle Cloud and retain VMware administrative access. This is made possible by Layer 2 networking in the cloud and our bare metal service. Customers will be able to extend existing VMware investments, processes, and tools while benefitting from the security and performance of Oracle Cloud Infrastructure."
