Prometheus Data in Azure Monitor for Containers Previewed by Microsoft

On Thursday, Microsoft announced the preview stage availability of Prometheus integration with Azure Monitor for Containers.

With this integration users can obtain both the "deeper telemetry" metrics Prometheus provides and the "out of the box" information obtained using Azure Monitor for Containers on Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS)-managed clusters.

AKS is Microsoft's Kubernetes-based container orchestration service. Azure Monitor for Containers provides access to inventory, health, events, logs and performance information in AKS environments, as well as Azure Container Instances environments. The Prometheus integration specifically adds greater insights into AKS workloads.

"With the additional workload metrics from Prometheus you now get a full stack, end-to-end monitoring view for your [AKS] in Azure Monitor for containers," explained Keiko Harada, a senior program manager on the Azure Monitoring and Diagnostics team, in the announcement.

The integration permits workload log queries to be created using the Kusto Query Language. It's also possible to surface the data into a customized dashboard in the Azure Portal. Alerts also can be created based on the Prometheus data.

The workload data can be pulled by Prometheus at the cluster-wide level or at the node-wide level, according to Microsoft's documentation.
