CenturyLink to Offer VMware Cloud on AWS
Ahead of this week's VMworld conference, telecommunications provider CenturyLink pre-emptively announced some VMware news of its own with the unveiling of an upcoming VMware-based private cloud service on the Amazon Web Services Inc. (AWS) platform.
Expected to launch by winter 2019, CenturyLink Private Cloud for VMware Cloud (VMC) is a fully managed service coming from the Monroe, La.-based VMware partner and cloud/networking specialist.
Developed in conjunction with VMware and AWS, the upcoming integrated hybrid service furthers the growing software-defined networking (SDN) movement, which since it began picking up steam several years ago has expanded to include software-defined data centers (SDDC).
"The platform can extend on-premises vSphere environments to a VMware software-defined data center running on Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) infrastructure," CenturyLink said in a news release. "The CenturyLink Private Cloud for VMC enables enterprises to run, manage, and secure their applications in a hybrid IT environment across a common management plane with their enterprise datacenter."
Benefits of the service include simplifying the way organizations build SDDCs, delivering accelerated time-to-value for IT workloads and a monthly payment scheme that avoids long-term commitments.
"As an innovator in the software-defined data center, this is another milestone on our journey to hybrid cloud solutions, enabling users to tap into private cloud resources anywhere our global network can reach," said CenturyLink exec David Shacochis. "These advances are fueled by CenturyLink's decades of expertise and mature relationships with both VMware and AWS."
