News: Wyse Unveils Viance

Viance optimized to work with Citrix XenDesktop

Anticipating growing momentum for desktop virtualization, thin-client supplier Wyse Technology recently announced the Viance family, a new appliance portfolio optimized for Citrix XenDesktop.

In conjunction with the Citrix solution, the new appliances make it possible to quickly and inexpensively provision a new desktop through simple, out-of-the-box attachment initiated by an end user.

In addition to fast setup time, Wyse is touting quick performance, rich multimedia experience enabled by its TCX software, and broad USB peripheral compatibility. In addition, there's a "green IT" dimension as an added benefit: the devices use 13 to 19 watts of power, compared to a typical desktop PC, which can easily require 10 times that amount of wattage.

The Viance portfolio offers features and functionality geared toward different classes of users. CMO Jeff McNaught believes that while desktop virtualization is a no-brainer for task-based workers such as call center and airline agents, the next frontier will be knowledge workers who have high expectations in terms of response time. Smooth video and audio playback, for example, is an important consideration and McNaught says the new portfolio raises the bar by decoding multimedia locally on the appliance. For mobile professionals, Wyse offers the Viance Pro X, which comes with 802.11 b/g/n wireless support and a 15.4 inch WXGA TFT LCD screen.
